Visits
Sacré-Cœur dominates the visit, but makes more sense beside the much older Saint-Pierre church and the surrounding web of streets. Place du Tertre retains its portrait artists, Maison Rose marks the bend on rue de l’Abreuvoir, Passe-Muraille pays tribute to Marcel Aymé, and the mills recall the pre-urban landscape. Clos Montmartre adds a working vineyard. The sights are close together, yet a few detours quickly restore calm.
Visits
Musée de Montmartre offers the best introduction to the hill’s artistic and popular history through collections, recreated studios and the Renoir Gardens. Dalí Paris presents the Catalan painter and sculptor’s world. At the foot of the hill, Halle Saint-Pierre champions outsider art and singular forms of expression inside the former Saint-Pierre market hall. Further down, LE BAL explores contemporary images. Check programmes, as temporary exhibitions continually reshape these venues.
Visits
Artistic life extends well beyond the easels of place du Tertre. Small galleries, ceramics studios, photography venues and community spaces work across the hill and around Château Rouge. Some open regularly, while others receive visitors only for exhibitions, open studios or appointments. Read local posters, step inside when a door is open and favour conversation with artists over a hurried purchase.
